Matt Cassel: Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Out After Appendectomy

Matt Cassel was ruled out prior to gameday, but it bears repeating for those that might be just checking on this that the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is out of action after undergoing an appendectomy during the week. Brodie Croyle is going to step in and start for the Chiefs as they take on division rivals the San Diego Chargers in a huge AFC West game that could decide the fate of the division race.
Croyle has never won an NFL game, as he's lost every of his nine starts in the league, meaning it's dicey for the Chiefs as they proceed without Cassel at least for this week. Cassel had become a solid game manager for the Chiefs, who rely heavily on their two-pronged running attack behind Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones.
With Cassel certainly out this week, it's possible Kansas City will lean even heavier on their great running game, and San Diego struggled horribly against the run a week ago when they lost a shocker to the Oakland Raiders at Qualcomm Stadium.
Cassel was an unlikely starter for the Patriots after Tom Brady was injured a few years ago, and he parlayed that into a decent career with the Chiefs thus far. Check out this piece on other unlikely stars in the league, the 15 Least Likely Superstars in the NFL
